Ozempic is the most talked about drug on the planet right now.
Most people taking it have no idea what it is actually doing.
And if you have ADHD or autism the gut connection changes everything.
Here is what nobody is explaining.

A 2025 study explored how autistic people describe burnout in their own words, and one message came through clearly:
Recovery wasn't simply about taking a break.
It was about having control over daily life.
Participants described recovery becoming possible when they could:
* reduce demands
* shape their environment
* choose when to rest
* set boundaries
* make their own decisions
The findings also reinforce that autistic burnout is a whole-system experience.
It can involve:
* chronic exhaustion
* increased sensory sensitivity
* social withdrawal
* cognitive overload
* physical health symptoms
Many behaviours that are often viewed negatively were described as protective responses during burnout, including:
* stepping back socially
* reducing sensory input
* spending more time alone
* doing less
These behaviours help reduce nervous system overload and create the conditions needed for recovery.
One of the study's most important insights is that autistic burnout is not simply an individual problem.
It reflects a mismatch between a person's needs and their environment.
Recovery therefore involves more than resting. It often requires changes that increase autonomy, reduce chronic stress, and provide ongoing support.
Autistic burnout is not a failure to cope.
It happens when demands exceed capacity for too long without enough control, flexibility, or accommodation.
Recovery looks different for everyone, but the goal is the same: creating conditions where the nervous system can begin to heal.

But a new 2026 study suggests it can affect much more than energy.
Participants described forgetting things they would normally remember, struggling to find words, having difficulty planning and organizing, and feeling unable to start even simple tasks. Some felt as though they had lost abilities that had once been automatic.
For many, everyday activities such as cooking, answering emails, paying bills, working, or maintaining personal hygiene suddenly became overwhelming.
Many blamed themselves.
"I must be lazy."
"I'm failing."
"I just need to try harder."
But the researchers suggest these experiences are not simply exhaustion. Autistic burnout can affect memory, communication, executive functioning, and daily living skills in ways that can feel frightening and difficult to explain.
Sometimes what looks like laziness is actually burnout.
Sometimes what feels like personal failure is actually cognitive overload.
Recovery is not about trying harder. It often requires reducing demands, restoring capacity, and giving the nervous system time to recover.

Your brain is already dopamine deficient. The reward system that drives motivation, focus, and the ability to feel satisfaction is chronically underactive. And then you smoke. And THC floods your brain with an artificial surge of dopamine that feels like everything your brain has been searching for. Calm. Focus. Quiet. For the first time in what feels like forever the noise stops.
That feeling is the trap.
Because your brain is extraordinary at remembering where it found that relief. And it will bring you back again and again. Not because you are weak. Because your dopamine system is doing exactly what it was designed to do.
But here is what the research shows. Regular marijuana use in people with ADHD does not treat the condition. It makes it worse. THC disrupts the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain already most affected by ADHD. The part responsible for planning, impulse control, working memory, and emotional regulation. The very things you are already struggling with.
Regular use accelerates cognitive decline in these areas. It increases anxiety and emotional dysregulation over time. And because your dopamine system adapts to the artificial surge your baseline drops even lower. Meaning you need more to feel normal. And without it you feel worse than before you ever started.
The cruel irony of marijuana and ADHD is that it feels like medicine. While quietly making everything harder.
If you have ADHD and you are using marijuana to cope you are not weak. You are not broken. You are a brain that was never given the right tools. And those tools exist. Proper diagnosis. The right medication. Therapy that actually addresses how your brain works. That is what changes things.
Save this. Share this with someone who needed to understand why this is happening to them.
